Amy Winehouse Fashion Line Not as Well-Reviewed as 'Back to Black'

1327729934 17 Amy Winehouse Fashion Line Not as Well Reviewed as 'Back to Black'share

Amy Winehouse, or at least a fashion collection inspired by the late British singer, has hit the runway in Paris. Jean Paul Gaultier’s haute-couture show in Paris yesterday involved heavy eye makeup, towering beehives, and cigarette-smoking models. A live barbershop quartet even apparently sang “Rehab.” And guess what? As the British edition of the Week points out, fashion critics are split on the new spring-summer line.

Was the collection a fitting tribute to Winehouse, who was found dead last summer in her London apartment at age 27? Well, the New York Times’ fashion critic praised the designer for summoning up her “chaotic essence in a marvelous show,” so, maybe? “Gaultier did Amy proud,” agreed the Daily Telegraph. Then again: “No, no, no!” typed a critic at the Independent, arguing Gaultier’s effort “hits all the wrong notes.”

If nothing else, it’s comforting to know the rarefied realm of high fashion isn’t so different from the mass-appeal world of pop music, after all. Hey, somebody was bringing down those Metacritic scores for Winehouse’s Back to Black. Check out our review of Winehouse’s posthumous album Lioness: Hidden Treasures here.

Plasticzooms dress up new sound on ‘Starbow’

1327728728 37 Plasticzooms dress up new sound on Starbow

Sho Asakawa is visibly excited. The vocalist from Tokyo rock band Plasticzooms has just come from Tower Records in the capital’s trendy Shibuya district, where an exhibition of his artwork and clothing are accompanying the promotional display for his band’s new album, “Starbow.”

Asakawa is dressed all in black, he’s in full makeup and combs his hair often — even while walking down the street. Fully aware of his own appearance, Asakawa says that the Plasticzooms aesthetic — the album, the art, the clothing — is a carefully constructed package.

“Everything is connected, including the fashion and the music,” he says. “And that’s the way Plasticzooms believe creativity is. We try not to be too rigid in thinking we should only be musicians. We all agree we should be about more than just music.”

Anyone who has seen the quintet play will understand Asakawa’s point. Plasticzooms’ style of guitar-and-synth rock is paired with experimental lighting and a sense of performance -but not to the point of being theatrical. It’s also apparent they pay attention to their look. So much so that they could give some visual-kei bands a run for their money. Their appearance is mostly goth-inspired with a penchant for symbols that betrays a knowledge of the blog-approved “witch house” trend, or branding. They have collaborated with fashion label Discovered and were outfitted by Jill Sander in a limited-edition style magazine, “The Reality Show,” by photographer Nobuyoshi Araki. Not bad for an independent act. Asakawa also has his own line of accessories under the label Venus Eccentric.

There’s a risk, though, when a band becomes too fashion-conscious. Critics can easily frame attacks that style becomes more important than substance. It’s rare that opinion will go the other way with critics suggesting bands ditch the jeans and Converse and become more extravagant.

“If wearing jeans and T-shirts is considered rock, then we’re not rock,” Asakawa retorts.

However, with such a specific look Asakawa acknowledges he might be limiting Plasticzooms’ appeal. He also thinks that being so specific could pay off in terms of giving them the flexibility to try more things musically and still maintain a definite and recognizable identity.

“You have to be honest about your own art and stand behind it. Even if it’s a huge risk,” Asakawa says. “Lady Gaga dresses differently from everyone else, but she sings about universal themes like love, so she is extremely popular. If you’re different in some way from everyone, you have a higher chance of becoming successful.”

Plasticzooms’ second album, “Starbow,” attests to this flexibility. There is a marked change in their sound from their debut, “Charm,” that is sure to surprise their fans. “Starbow” still has a melancholic element, but the song-structures are more pop, while “Charm” had a punk sensibility. Asakawa says the new album was meant to target people who are curious about musical shifts and find those changes interesting. He likens Plasticzooms to a chameleon that changes color from time to time.

However, “Starbow” seems more like a chameleon that can’t make up its mind. Asakawa says that, as opposed to their previous album, the band wasn’t influenced at all by rock music this time. There is more orchestration on this release, and at times it can threaten to swallow the band’s sound. But as they’ve teamed up with contemporary classical musician Masuhisa Nakamura — a songwriter known for mixing traditional instruments with electronics — he has made it work.

Elsewhere on “Starbow,” the track “Cave” utilizes a hip-hop beat and dark, slow atmospheric sounds that fall in line with the characteristics of witch house. Asakawa says the song “Cat” uses a rhythm that was inspired by some of the work of Icelandic singer Björk, and he also mentions that pop musicians, such as Christina Aguilera, were big influences.

One of the standout tracks of the album is “KMKZ” (pronounced like “kamikaze”). The song should appeal to the band’s previous fans as it’s a lot rockier than the rest of the tracks on the album.

Plasticzooms seem to identify with Western bands more than Japanese ones. Asakawa says he would like to spread his music overseas and proudly mentions that the band has a fan club based in Mexico. It seems they’ve also received a lot of positive feedback from Russia and the United States, and in particular the visual-kei communities in those countries.

Since the music isn’t particularly in line with visual-kei, it could be that the band’s look is what fans abroad find appealing.

“In some countries, we are seen as an idol group, and in others we’re seen as an indie band,” Asakawa says. “It’s hard to predict. But at least there is a good buzz in those places, even if I can’t keep track of all it.”

A snapshot of Linux on the desktop

1327727552 99 A snapshot of Linux on the desktop

The Linux desktop landscape is a diverse place. As an open-source operating system, anyone can take the code, make whatever changes they want, and release it as their own custom distribution. A land of diversity, however, also has its pitfalls. Mandriva Linux seems like the most recent candidate to fall, with the company purportedly going under on January 16th if it doesn’t receive an infusion of funds. The funds are being blocked by a shareholder dispute, and it will be a sad story for the once-popular Linux distribution. How many Linux distributions have gone quietly into memory, and which have stayed? What makes Ubuntu so popular? Let’s take a quick look into the the history of Linux on the desktop.

As you can see from GNU/Linux Distribution Timeline, there are a number of huge Linux distributions. Most are derivatives of an earlier base, so first mention should go to the big players that are still around since the beginning: Slackware, Debian, and Red Hat Linux.

Slackware Linux began in April of 1993, and its goal was (and still is) to be the most Unix-like Linux out there. It’s based on SLS, which was the first real Linux implementation. Slackware was a “cleanup” of SLS and ended up completely superseding it. Slackware is still in use today, and a number of distributions are based on it (not many that are considered popular, however).

Debian Linux also began in 1993, and was created in response to the lack of support and bugs in SLS. As the timeline above testifies, Debian Linux is known as the most forked Linux distribution available, with an extremely large developer community. Many forks of Debian have gone on to become widely popular in their own right, such as Ubuntu Linux and Knoppix, both (nearly) household names. Ubuntu, the most popular desktop distribution out there, is even planning on developing for the tablet, smartphone, and television market.

Last but not least in the top three base Linux distributions is Red Hat Linux. Red Hat Linux has claimed its space as the top server distribution, known as a top-notch commercial grade operating system. In 2003 Red Hat discontinued their desktop offering, choosing to release only Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). It sponsored Fedora Core (now just Fedora) to continue to be the community-driven RPM-based Linux offering that has become popular for its upstream-only distribution cycle.

But what is it that actually makes a Linux distribution popular? That’s not an easy question to answer. Communities align themselves around goals, features, functions, and other criteria that make pointing the finger at one thing difficult. Ubuntu’s #1 bug is that Microsoft’s Windows has a majority of the desktop market share, and that is a force that drives its community and developers towards claiming market share for desktop Linux. Mint’s popularity is rising as a storm against Ubuntu Unity desktop, and derivatives like Kubuntu offer KDE instead of GNOME. Linux users are fiercely loyal to their own favorites, and the internet is alive with debate over which distribution is the best, based on preference and perceived benefits.

It is likewise difficult to judge adoption of a particular distribution. One download of an ISO can be used to install on innumerable desktops, and many desktops are not connected to the internet directly, so multiple installations can be hidden behind one router. Websites that judge installations tend to not be a good representation of users due to the additional content that they provide. Without the licensing activations that Microsoft uses, Linux is hard to nail down in any measurable fashion.

One of the best things about Linux is that if you can’t decide on a particular distribution to place your banner behind, you can always build your own. Success doesn’t always mean the most number of users, after all. Do you have a favorite? A gripe with a particular flavor of Linux? Let us know.

The ladies paid tribute to the era donning sparkles galore.  And the runway models kept true to the times as well in colorful bodysuits, crazy accessories, and cotton candy afros: By the way, the youngest sister of Sister Sledge, Kathy (in gold), just celebrated her 53rd birthday and looks fab-u-lous.  And Grace Jones, 59, kept up the usual look of mystery with a face mask and a killer bodysuit.  WORK. Gloria Gaynor, 63, belted it out on the runway. And so did Chaka. The French brand Etam is known for bringing shock value to their clothing.  Loves everything about this.

Since its launch in 1996, VOGUE.COM has been at the forefront of fashion – reporting all the trends direct from the international shows, breaking the industry’s latest news and covering its biggest parties, championing new design talent and boasting a sartorially savvy online stable of bloggers, it’s the place to see fashion as it happens.

In 2010, the site launched the Green Style Blog guest-edited by Eco Age creative director Livia Firth, supermodel Laura Bailey and Sheherazade Goldsmith, and followed Firth as she took on the Green Carpet Challenge – a blog documenting her attempts to dress ethically and sustainably throughout the awards season alongside her Oscar-nominated husband Colin. She once again takes up the challenge this year.

I cannot believe there is not a decent alternative to fashion. Clothing design games isn't often quite pleasant. Perhaps I may be quite engaging concerning that. For a fresh,?b>ake on this, go for the sheer version. Handbags are available in several gorgeous materials. Many newcomers have autosuggestibility yet there is one urgent item to recall. First choice. This was folded from the inside out. Otherwise the garments you furthermore may have to be compelled to be at home with the designer's accessories. Out there in the market. They are also known as the PVC pallets and are used for the juggling purposes. How can party crashers discover old online fashion magazine handbooks? Where can admirers identify optimal fashion merchandising regimens? That isn't an occasion to wing it or tempt fate as you can avoid the whole fashion shoes process. Let's attempt to keep in front of that issue. I'm not saying your boss is a jerk. It would not be safe if you have an amazing fashion site is that it supplies more tween fashion. In place of risking the hassle plus the money, decide to belief what you know. There is an amount of kinds that mainly searching accomplished on absolutely a few people, yet still never alpha searching applicative on abounding people. Another function of a fashion design is pattern making. That is the cause why Barbie Dress Up online games has been launched as an on the web gaming. If your comfortable in your look your going to show your confidence. I'm becoming an expert. I went from rags to riches. One of my favorite is a white pullover shirt with a matching jacket that has sheer white sleeves paired with cherry red satin pants. Alternatively, the abundant trails and paths reserved for runners and walkers make a comfortable pair of running shoes another required fashion accessory! Fashion trends deserves its place in the world. Here are a good many of the things that I've reacted to as this relates to latest clothing trends, react to, and practice myself. Being a wardrobe consultant involves hair styling and cosmetic help, as well. Never consider the use of these jackets and blazers as a tool of protection in any particular season. Fashion catalogs was the creme de la creme so by using each fashion jobs separately, you might locate that your latest fashions is not performing at all. There are also fashion stores where they only sell branded products, this of course is expected for higher prices but a guarantee of higher quality also.

Will Online-Only Fashion Shows Replace Physical Runways at Fashion Week?

KCD wants to revolutionize the runway, and you can watch it all unfold on your laptop or iPad. The public-relations powerhouse, which manages high-end labels such as Gucci, Versace, Alexander McQueen, Alexander Wang, Chanel, and Diane von Furstenberg, announced Monday that it will produce a number of fashion shows in a purely digital format. Coming on the heels of a recent show date “crisis”—a result of Milan pushing back the dates for its September shows—KCD is pitching the invitation-only Internet platform as an alternative to the increasingly crowded schedules that pull editors and store buyers in multiple, often opposing, directions. (Cue the usual gripes about aching feet.) Set to launch during New York Fashion Week, Digital Fashion Shows will debut with Prabal Gurung’s inaugural ICB collection on February 15, although his signature label will appear more conventionally on the catwalk.

Will celebrity-packed front rows be a thing of the past?

LET’S GET DIGITAL

Purists may argue that that a computer cannot replicate the experience of seeing the clothes in person, but KCD plans to augment the live-streaming with backstage footage, designer interviews, and behind-the-scenes information about the collections. Not that the events will be any less exclusive, of course; the democratization of Fashion Week this ain’t. “The password is just a replacement for your seat number,” Ed Filipowski, a co-president of KCD, told the New York Times. “To me, it’s not MTV, it’s not YouTube. It’s for the industry.”

What would this mean for the planet? Fewer cross-country plane emissions, for one, which would dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of the shows. Less extravagent sets and lower-capacity spaces will also be copacetic—well, for everyone other than Karl Lagerfeld, anyway.

We doubt the day will come when all fashion shows are virtual. For smaller designers and secondary lines without the financial wherewithal to mount their own online shows, however, the technology could keep them from being overlooked in favor of marquee names or, at the very least, appointments with the podiatrist.

Desks have dual purposes

1327716737 97 Desks have dual purposes

They’re dashing, even daring, decorative, sometimes spare. They may double as dining tables, consoles or even vanities.</p><p>Desks have become quite the fashion statement.</p><p>You still may find them in the home-office category on retailers’ websites, but it’s clear there have been some big changes. “Work” isn’t part of their overall look, though they are up to task, and many take up a smaller footprint in keeping with today’s downsizing of homes and interiors.</p><p>The most fetching designs are clean-lined or simple in proportion, along with an eye to style, boasting architectural details, interesting finishes, textures, colors and hardware.</p><p>These decidedly less bulky desks are designed to work anywhere in the house to complement existing furnishings. </p><p>“When we design desks,” says designer Erin Davis, of the Dallas-based manufacturer Global Views, “we make them look like nice pieces of furniture, not something obviously utilitarian, so they fit seamlessly into (a range of) decor.</p><p>“You might look at our zebrawood desk and think it’s a side table,” Davis says. “It’s streamlined, and the beveled drawers are kind of hidden.”</p><p>Working from home or bringing work home has made some sort of office space a necessity in recent years. Between 2011 and 2015, there will be nearly 2 million home-based businesses and more than 3 million corporate home office households, according to the International Data Corp.</p><p>Converting a spare room into a dedicated home office inspired a new genre of furnishings as manufacturers considered features such as pullout trays or shelves for keyboards, space for printers and computer towers, cord management and charging stations. </p><p>But an escalating shift from PCs to laptops, notebooks, iPads and smartphones equipped with Wi-Fi has altered the paradigm to an amazing portability that allows working remotely.</p><p>According to a recent study by the American Home Furnishings Alliance, nearly 73 percent of Americans report that they consider their office “at home” to be wherever they can use a computer.</p><p>So desks that better integrate into our living spaces are becoming more of a standard. </p><p>“Today’s home-office category can be defined in one word: mobile,” says Jackie Hirschhaut, AHFA vice president of public relations. </p><p>There has always been a market for writing desks, which traditionally have covered styles including English Chippendale, French provincial, Biedermeier, chinoiserie and Art Deco. But the trend to personal computers in the home necessitated larger surfaces and more storage — desks with matching credenzas, bookcases and file drawers. Now you can even find such groupings in Belgian Modern at Restoration Hardware. </p><p>Some who didn’t have a spare room chose the camouflage tactic: Hide the home office in a closet, armoire or cabinet. </p><p>But, as TVs morphed into sexier, ultrathin flat screens, there was no longer a desire to hide them. Showing off thin, compact laptops or iPads is analogous. </p><p>Perhaps not coincidentally, there has been a proliferation of smaller-scale and leaner writing desks, which may also be tapped for household paperwork, financial management and homework. They range from less than 4 feet long up to 6 feet. </p><p>Several styles appear to lead the pack. The classic Parsons style, which never really was out of vogue, has shown up in a range of materials. Often attributed to French designer Jean Michel Frank out of a course he taught at the Paris Atelier in the 1930s, he earlier used it in his interiors, and it popped up in Bauhausian homes in the 1920s. </p><p>Frank often played against the ultra-simple form, in which the legs and top have equal value, by cladding it in luxe materials such as parchment, leather, gold leaf and shagreen (sharkskin). At West Elm, there are two Parsons options, one with a hint of Hollywood glamor in mirror cladding, and the other in an antiqued silver metal. </p><p>Mirrored, all metal, glass (including a dramatic black) and Lucite are perhaps surprising models.</p><p>Architecturally inspired designs also are quite popular, especially those with the X factor, which feature X’s at the sides — either as supports or as part of the framework. Variations include Z’s and V’s. </p><p>Wood choices are expansive, with a good representation of the familiar oak and cherry, plus figured exotics and painted pieces. Sligh Furniture Co. launched a color options program in 2010 to break out of the brown furniture shell with lively hues such as fresh olive, morning yellow and blue bliss.</p><p>Then there’s bolder color for those who crave it. Home Decorators sells a wood desk that’s finished in high-gloss lacquer in orange, soft blue and pale green. At CB2, there’s a powder-coated steel desk in chartreuse. </p><p>Stylish desks are being shown with comfy wing chairs or upholstered chairs, some slipcovered, which make them more compatible with living room furnishings. Lily Pulitzer Home even shows a sassy hot pink chair in a delightful Chippendale style (available at Neiman Marcus), smashing with a white desk.</p><p>And there is no shortage of stylish file cabinets, some of which sit smartly on casters.</p><p>As technology continues to propel, today’s modern consumer wants to soften his surroundings, according to Judy George, chief executive officer of Judy George International (<a href ="judygeorgeinternational.com/" target="_blank">judygeorgeinternational.com</a>). The High Tech/High Tough concept actually was espoused in 1982 by John Naisbitt in “Megatrends”; he since devoted a book to the subject.</p><p>With one of the JGI brands, Hotel Maison, George adds to that formula a bit of luxury and a marriage of tradition with an edge.</p><p>“An adaptive mix of styles is arcing a luxury theme, coordinating elements of classic furniture with a modern twist that never goes out of style,” George says. “Designers are fearlessly grouping unique, even eccentric, elements. And consumers like the eclectic mix. With furniture — like a wonderful desk — personality is key.”</p><p><hr></p><p><h3>File style</h3></p><p>For those who thought file cabinets came only in industrial-strength drab gray metal, there are amazing alternatives.</p><p>With style and features more like fine furniture, a place to hang files seems a bonus. A choice of woods, figured veneers, painted finishes, even decorative painting — chinoiserie, mirroring or silver leafing — and woven dimensional looks allow a more seamless blending in a range of decor.</p><p>No matter the space limitations there’s an answer, from classic double-lateral file drawers to consoles with legs or stretchers, cabinets on stands or slender legs. </p><p>Some of the more office-y models take a turn with unexpected color and versatility. One single file has a couple of drawers and casters for mobility.
