FOX5 headed to MAGIC at the Las Vegas Convention Center Wednesday to see what's in style for spring/summer through fall 2012.

While there, we ran into famous designer Betsey Johnson. She arrived in Las Vegas for a meet and greet a day after she showed her collection at New York Fashion Week.

“I'm getting very 'sportsweary,' and doing the sticky, skinny stuff; as well as the big shapes,” Johnson said. “The fun, flirty dresses; as well as the oversized tops with the kitties and the hearts, and the lightning bolts and the stripes. A lot of sparkle, a little embellishment.”

“I'm trying to compete… but in my own way. We don't need any more – wonderful Jessica's or Material Girl's you know. I'm just trying to bring myself… to learn what really, really works; and just keep those prices realistic, affordable and fun,” Johnson said.

We spoke with other fashion insiders about the latest trends.

“Sheers are very hot and old school, vintage Versace prints, on flowy tops,” Sweet Rain's Jason Parks said.

We're told to expect the color blocking to continue, “Pops of color! So, the color blocks will be very bright and bold. You'll see a lot of orange, neon, corals and bright blues,” Sweet Rain's Blakely Bunnell said. “The bolder- the better!”

Insiders say nautical-inspired colors were still on the runways in fashion week. Flowy, short skirts with a lot of volume and pleats are also big.

“Yellow has been really big, we've been seeing it everywhere… with lots of little girly details, like lace collars,” Dallas boutique owner Gladys Contreras said.

And with all that color, expect a lot of patterns, from small ones like birds- to big ones. “Southwest-looking prints, those have been big, you can (pair it) with cowboy boots,” Contreras said.

Colorful blazers with power shoulders are also big for fall. Fashionistas can pair those with their patterned tops or dresses to help tone them down. Also trendy is mixing and matching the patterns.

Experts say if you're afraid to wear a lot of color, you can just add pops of it with your neutral wardrobe. For instance, wear a white shirt and jeans, but pair them with a colorful, printed scarf.

As for the accessories, Bunnell said, “As big and bold the colors are, the accessories are going to be there to match.”

Expect to see a lot of chunky jewelry as well as wedges and colorful heels.

But as far as for what looks best on each individual, Johnson has this advice: “Fashion is in the heart – and soul – and spirit, that's it. There's so much out there just pick what you like.”

Thus, most of us are forced to work with what we’re given; some have large closets, some have small, and others don’t have one at all! We have found  4 simple steps to fix this continuing problem and ways utilize your closet to its full potential.

Step #1: De-clutter

 Yea, it’s a pain, but get it done! Pull everything out of your closet and make piles: things that belong in your closet and things that could easily be stored somewhere else. From there, detangle the pile of things that do actually belong by putting them into 2 more piles: things you wear, and those you know you don’t wear or haven’t worn for at least a year. This is your opportunity to give back by donating those that are just taking up extra space. Remember, be detail oriented, you may breeze through a few one hit wonders thinking “I better keep this..this look may come back someday.” Trust us, they won’t. Trends are a continuing cycle and if you haven’t seen them come back since you bought the piece you are deliberating over, there’s a 99.9% chance they’re gone for good.

Step #2: Analyze

Evaluate the empty space of your closet without everything piled and packed inside. You’ll have a better idea of what space isn’t being utilized and be able to see where shelves could be put in, extra rods could be added and where storage containers will fit.

Step #3: Utilize vertical space

Get those extra shelves, rods and containers that you know you need in that tiny little space! We suggest getting an over-the-door shoe rack as opposed to putting them on a floor shoe rack. That is simply taking up valuable space that you know you need! Tiered hangers are definitely key. They allow several pieces of clothing on one hanger and take up much less space. Adhesive wall hooks are also a great idea if you have the wall space on the sides or back of your closet. Scarves, belts, hats and other accessories can be easily hung on them and they only cost a couple of bucks! (Yeah we know, they aren’t the most attractive things in the world, but get crafty and paint over the white plastic with a cool color and they may turn out to look more appealing than you thought!). You will be able to easily find all of these things at home stores like The Container store or Bed Bath & Beyond.

Step #4: Organize and store away out-of-season clothing

What kind of clothing do you have the most of? Give each type a designated space of your closet; put those pieces that wrinkle easily on hangers and those that don’t, folded on shelves. By giving everything a specific spot, not only will your closet immediately become more organized, but you’ll actually be able to find stuff! No more digging through tangled hangers trying to find where you put your little red dress (c’mon, we’ve all been there). Once you have created these spaces, go a step further and separate items by season. If it is the middle of summer and you are hanging sweaters and tweed pants, well that is just a waste of space right there! Put all of the clothing that doesn’t apply to the present season in containers and store them on shelves or at the bottom of your closet. Or better yet, use underbed storage containers! Handy low-profile plastic underbed containers easily slide in and out and hold a ton of stuff! You’ll find so much more space for the clothes you already have, (as well as the clothes you know you are going to have next week after your shopping trip!) after implementing these 4 tips.

In full accord with Pantone’s color predictions, men’s magazine Esquire forecasts bold colors for menswear in 2012.

Brilliant shades that were once used as accents- orange, green and mustard- will become the focus of men’s apparel. Esquire also predicts that designers will get a little  unorthodox in their 2012 collections by merging the formal with the informal.

American Studies Associate Professor Jo Paoletti’s book, Pink and Blue: Telling the Boys from the Girls in America, — released Jan. 16 — explores gendered trends in children’s clothing from the 1880s to the present.

She said she focused on trends in young children because at an early age, people start receiving messages about what is and is not socially acceptable for either gender to do, say and wear. These messages, she said, can negatively impact how society views gender and how children identify themselves as they grow up.

“I’m focusing in on children under 7 because I really wanted to just look at when gender identity was being formed and when it’s first being expressed by the child,” she said.

In Pink and Blue, Paoletti debunks common myths about the color pink. She said although many disagree about whether pink was originally reserved for boys before it became a socially-mandated girly color, the color was in fact more commonly worn by boys than blue in some parts of the country.

But, she said, pink never was something boys had to wear, like it is today for baby girls.

“It didn’t have the weight of practically natural law that it does now,” she said. “It used to be just not a rule. It was a matter of fashion, taste.”

The book also explores the way adults today are uncomfortable when they cannot quickly identify the gender of a child, and how pink and blue outfits are used in part to ease social anxiety about gender ambiguity.

Paoletti found this was not always the case — both boys and girls wore dresses, pink was an acceptable color for boys, and parents even dressed children in unisex clothing in the 1970s.

“One hundred years ago, people were quite comfortable with the idea of baby clothing being ambiguous. Baby clothing gave no hint to the sex of the child,” Paoletti said. “And now there’s this real expectation that you should be able to tell the boy from the girl.”

Sociology professor Melissa Milkie said she’s also noticed the trend.

“It’s really hard for adults to interact with a baby without knowing its gender,” Milkie said. “They feel uncomfortable without a categorization.”

Junior theater performance major Erica Philpot said she thinks society often expects to easily identify a baby’s gender because it is a quick means of classification. However, she said, that can inhibit how children express their gender.

“It kind of just boxes people in and automatically puts the label on them,” Philpot said. “Sometimes society is just quick to put people in categories because it’s easier.”

Paoletti and Milkie said enforcing strict gender roles can limit a child’s self-expression, although they are ultimately not likely to conform to society’s standards.

“What we attach to these categories is a lot of expectations. It would be seen as a negative to have these strict categorizations,” Milkie said. “There’s nothing natural about these meanings. It shows the fluidity of these what we think are really important meanings are somewhat arbitrary.”

Paoletti said she hopes her book helps people look past these quick labels and be more skeptical about gender being a strict rule rather than just a label developed by society.

“I think my goal in general, just in teaching American studies, is just to get people to think more critically about things they take for granted,” Paoletti said.

“Sex is much more complicated than pink or blue.”

It resulted from a mix of opportunity and circumstance. During my years living and working in France, I acquired certain knowledge of the French market.  It’s one of the most dynamic fashion markets in the world. Paris being the fashion capital of the world, so many new designers and brands emerge in France and export to markets worldwide.

There’s a strong global demand for French brands, particularly well-established luxury brands but also newer designers.
