Wrangler Producing Shirt Designed by Kent State Student

1329905539 63 Wrangler Producing Shirt Designed by Kent State Student

A work-wear garment created by a Kent State University fashion merchandising major will be available for purchase in the Wrangler Christmas 2012 catalog.

Garrettsville native Shannon Gallagher, a fifth-year fashion merchandising major and entrepreneurship minor, designed the garment in her product development class.

The Western-style work-wear shirt is long-sleeved with a designed yoke, shirt-type collar, flapped breast pockets and decorative stitching. It is designed for men and has been produced by Wrangler from a concept to a wearable piece.

Gallagher’s motivation came from her rural upbringing and experience on a farm.

“My inspiration came from my lifestyle of living on a farm and what my brother and father would wear. I’ve raised and showed livestock for years and this design came from there,” the 22-year-old explained.

Gallagher credits Kent State Professor Trista Grieder for her success with Wrangler. She said Grieder “played a huge role” in her achievement because Grieder’s project proposal was encouraging – and she also submitted Gallagher’s design to her contact at Wrangler for review.

“Shannon came to me with her passion for the Western customer early in the spring semester of 2010. She had tried to design lines for this customer before and knew I had worked for (Wrangler) in my industry background,” Grieder said. “This was Shannon’s chance to shine.”

Grieder helps to prepare students in using product development industry sheets, Illustrator, Photoshop and many other industry-wide resources. Her students learn that merchandisers and designers are partners in the creation of fashion and that a large network can be the foundation for future successes.

“I try to guide the product development class into other directions than just women’s wear. Due to the continuous friendship with my past mentor at Wrangler, we embarked on a men’s Western shirt project. Shannon’s project stood out, and they decided to manufacture her design,” said Grieder.

“(Trista) Grieder emailed me and it took reading it three times and having my mom read the email to me to believe it was real,” Gallagher said. “It was even more exciting when she sent the email about my shirt design actually (being) produced and in her office where I could finally see and touch it!”

Gallagher has received praise and support from her family and friends. She said her father and brother “are excited to buy the shirt next Christmas and are proud to be part of the inspiration.” Although Gallagher is unsure what the future holds after graduation, she is looking forward to “graduating with honors” in May.

During her free time, Gallagher enjoys sewing, scrapbooking and photography. She also dedicates her time to teaching children to sew through 4-H clubs and programs. She stays involved in the fashion community by engaging in local entrepreneurship organizations, 4-H, leadership programs and scholarly groups.

She currently works as an independent Mary Kay consultant, a teacher at the Looking Glass Learning Center and a sales associate at the Longaberger Factory Store.

Grieder joined the Kent State Fashion School faculty in fall 2010 and has been in the business for more than 13 years. She earned her bachelor of arts in costume design from Kent State and her master’s of science in higher education in online teaching and learning from Kaplan University.

Her industry experience includes working with such companies as Wrangler Jeans, Dillard’s, Augusta Sportswear and Mountain High Hosiery. Grieder has spent most of her career in product development and CAD. One of her greatest successes was winning an award for designing a women’s jean for Wrangler, which sold in record numbers.

YouTube splashes out to lure TV viewers

1329904354 85 YouTube splashes out to lure TV viewers

YouTube is enlisting Hollywood’s help to reach a generation of viewers more familiar with smartphones than TV remotes.

The online video giant is aiming to create 25 hours of programming a day with the help of some of the top names in traditional TV.

The Google-owned site is spreading its wealth among producers, directors, and other filmmakers, using a US$100 million ($119 million) pot of seed money it committed last year.

The fund represents YouTube’s largest spending on original content so far.

YouTube believes it is laying groundwork for the future. While the number of traditional TV watchers has levelled off in recent years, more people are watching video on mobile phones, tablets and computers, especially the 18 to 34-year-old age demographic that advertisers covet.

The idea is to create 96 additional YouTube channels, which are essentially artists’ home pages, where viewers can see existing video clips and click “subscribe” to be notified when new content goes up.

Well-funded videos by a select roster of stars are likely to be more watchable than the average YouTube fare of cute cats and webcam monologues.

YouTube is betting a solid stream of good content will attract more revenue from advertisers, bring viewers back frequently and bolster its parent company’s fledgling web-connected-TV platform, Google TV.

The cash has enticed some of TV’s biggest stars, including Fast Five director Justin Lin, who directs episodes of Community, CSI creator Anthony Zuiker and Nancy Tellem, the former president of CBS entertainment.

Zuiker is teaming on a horror series for YouTube after observing his own family’s behaviour. His three pre-teen sons spend more time on phones, iPads and computers than watching TV these days.

“We want to jointly take the risk with YouTube and roll the dice on the future,” Zuiker says.

“The old regime is going to falter because everybody thinks the TV is the only device that really counts, and that’s just not the case.”

For producers, it’s a chance to create shows free of meddling from major studios. They can also stay relevant with a younger crowd whose viewing is moving increasingly online.

Several new channels such as the extreme sports-focused Network A and Spanish-language Tutele have launched already. YouTube hopes to have them all up and running by this (northern) summer.

“This was really about galvanising the ecosystem at large,” says Alex Carloss, global head of original programming for YouTube.

“We see the portfolio [of funded channels] really representing the best of TV meeting the best of the web.”

YouTube isn’t the only web video service that has started to pay for original content. Netflix launched the original series Lilyhammer, while Hulu premiered Battleground.

But YouTube videos tend to be under 10 minutes, instead of fitting into traditional half-hour or hour-long TV slots. And aside from a few guidelines, ultimate control is given over to the artist, including what is uploaded and when new episodes appear.

YouTubers also get away with far edgier stuff than the middle finger that rapper M.I.A. flashed during the Super Bowl half-time show.

Although YouTube’s entire investment is less than half of what some studios spend on one blockbuster movie, about a third of the new channels were awarded to scrappy YouTube veterans who already know how to make it big online while keeping production costs low.

YouTube expects to recoup what it spends on the grants by sharing ad revenue the new videos generate.

At Maker Studios, which received money for three new channels, the funds have turbo-charged an already teeming operation that has about 160 full-time staff spread across several buildings crammed with props and computers in west Los Angeles.

On a recent visit, two scenes were being shot in an alley. One was for a parody of a Christmas movie trailer. The other was for a new series about a crime-fighting van called Si, Es I, Pepe.

Maker cranks out about 300 YouTube videos each month at a bare-bones cost of about US$1000 each.

The studio’s videos generate a whopping 500 million views each month, thanks largely to established hits that include Ray William Johnson’s roundup of crazy videos and such viral giants as Epic Rap Battles of History.

Advertisers pay up to US$10 per 1000 views for video ads that precede the featured content, according to TubeMogul, a major buyer of YouTube ads for the nation’s biggest advertisers including Proctor & Gamble and News Corp’s 20th Century Fox movie studio.

Established YouTube partners share roughly half of their revenue with the site.

So if Maker videos generate US$1 or US$2 in ad revenue per 1000 views, it would just be scraping by.

Maker co-founder Danny Zappin, who quit film school to buy a high-end camera to start a career on YouTube, says it’s a tricky balance to keep the studio’s share of ad revenue higher than the cost of video-making.

The undisclosed amount it got from YouTube, on top of the US$1.5 million venture capital it received about a year ago, lets Maker put up more videos without waiting for the views and cash to roll in. “It gives us resources and runway that we wouldn’t otherwise have,” Zappin said.

For other less established players in online video, the money has given them an added reason to get involved.

Former CBS executive Tellem teamed up with TV entrepreneur Brian Bedol to create Bedrocket Media Ventures, an upstart production company behind several new YouTube channels, including Network A.

The funding “allowed us, or caused us, to focus on YouTube ahead of other platforms”, Bedol says.

Analysts believe YouTube has made a wise investment at a time ad rates for online video are rising.

YouTube can be successful with just a few big hits – think of Rebecca Black’s Friday – even if thousands of videos fall flat. It’s similar to the hit-or-miss approach to traditional TV and movies.

“The investor community does not look at this as money wasted,” Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter says.

Since promising to share ad revenue with its most popular uploaders in 2007, YouTube has invested in original content mainly by paying for equipment and training new artists, but it was never as big as this.

Backing up its new strategy, YouTube also revamped its homepage to prioritise channels and recommendations above just the most-viewed videos. The revamp allows advertisers to target popular channels or categories of content more easily.

YouTube’s funding plan takes a page from Apple’s playbook. When the iPhone maker launched its App Store in 2008, a US$100 million seed fund created by Silicon Valley investor John Doerr spawned hundreds of thousands of new apps.

“Our developers are not software engineers,” YouTube’s vice-president of global content partnerships, Robert Kyncl, told a convention last month.

“Our developers are Hollywood stars, are online stars, are regular folks like you and I.”

If nothing else, the injection of funds will spawn content never before seen on any screen, large or small.

Fast Five director Lin, who is teaming with YouTube stars Ryan Higa and Kevin “KevJumba” Wu on the “YOMYOMF” channel, said his focus is not to try to find audiences with stereotypical Asian-American content.

Rather, the idea is to give a platform to people who have unique voices but haven’t been heard yet.

He says Higa and Wu didn’t follow any set rules when they jumped to popularity with a mix of oddball humour, brutal honesty and rap.

“They just did what they loved, and people came,” Lin said.

“If we’re going to fail, I would rather go out with that philosophy.”

Design Styles – Urban Bohemian Style

1329903146 24 Design Styles – Urban Bohemian Style

What exactly is Urban Bohemian style? I like to think that it is like many urban women out there: beautifully traditional, and yet thoroughly modern, influenced by world travels, unconventional, and yet, comfortingly familiar. And Urban Bohemian style is becoming an increasingly favourite design.

In the 19th century, Bohemians were those people who lived unconventional lives, that weren’t concerned with traditional ways of thinking and living. They often were artists, writers, musicians, and actors who though very creative were also somewhat anomaly by the days’ standards. The term came from roving gypsies that were thought to come from Bohemia, but today, the term refers more to an attitude than an exact lifestyle.

Now when we talk about Bohemian Chic design or Urban Bohemian style, we are speaking about a look that is more about the mix of collected things than a specific style.

It is often traditional, sometimes glamorous, mixed with modern and ethnic pieces all mixed together to suit the individual’s liking. It is difficult to summarize a style that is so varied, individualized and eclectic but there are a few basics to know.

Here are a few ideas to help create Urban Bohemian style:

-Colors-The great thing about urban bohemian style is that you can select from any color palette you like. It can be all white for instance or rich jewel tones or soft muted shades. Before deciding on an actual color scheme, it is important to decide how the room should feel. Sometimes bohemian spaces are romantic and dark with rich colors and bold patterns. Other times it can feel breezy and light filled like an artist’s studio. Or it might have a worn elegance that muted colors achieve.

-Furnishings-As with choosing colors for Bohemian style, choosing furniture is directly connected to how the space should feel.

A few ornate but worn pieces look spectacular when paired with easy modern shapes and colors. For instance, you might have a very ornate bed with luxurious and exotic bedding but when place with modern nightstands or a clean lined bench would look stunning. They key is mixing periods and styles to find the right equilibrise for you.

-Artwork and Accessories-Artwork and accessories are what bring a room to life. This definitely holds true in bohemian design as well. They breathe life and your personality into the space. Whether minimalism is your bag or if you like “stuff”, both have a place in urban bohemian style. Accessories can be mementos from traveling or easy things that have meaning for you. The key again is to mix styles for an interesting blend. You might have very modern sculptural vase next to an ornately carved mirror creating a stunning juxtaposition.

-Putting it all together-Overall it is important to select what you like. And how neat is it that there is finally a style where you can be an utter design schizophrenic and still be incredibly chic at the same time? At the end of the day your room should be uniquely yours and talk volumes of who you are.Design should be fun. So don’t be afraid, go for it!

London: Scenes From the Passing Parade

1329892338 58 London: Scenes From the Passing ParadeCarl Court/Agence France-Presse — Getty ImagesThe finale at Jonathan Saunders.

“Why me?” shouted the photographer, laden down with his equipment, as he was evicted from a crowded elevator by a security guard moments before the Jonathan Saunders show was scheduled to begin here in London on Sunday evening. Told he had brought the weight limit of the elevator over its recommended level and would have to wait for another, he pointed at another photographer who was allowed to stay, and wailed again, “Why me?”

There is always a show going on at the fashion weeks in New York, London, Paris and Milan, and the one guarantee is that you’ll have plenty of time to watch it. I’m not talking about the display of the collections themselves — that blur of fabric, technique and glamour that goes by in about seven or eight minutes. I’m talking about the endless time spent waiting, usually a half an hour or more, before the show actually begins, and you get to watch the preening, the positioning and the star-gazing that goes on in the audience, all the while wondering why you can’t get cellphone service.

The one thing you can count on is that, no matter how late you are to a show, you are never too late for it to begin.

Until, of course, you are.

Earlier that day, my London cabbie — a tribe usually famous for knowing every nook and cranny of the city — got lost on the way to the Thomas Tait show in the East End. We arrived about 20 minutes late, only to find that the show had actually begun without us, and we were locked outside.

It’s an interesting experience to watch — or not watch — a fashion show from behind closed doors. It all feels familiar. The pounding music that accompanies the models walking down the runway, the rhythmic applause that you know signals the finale, the whoops and hollers that you know mean that the designer has made a brief appearance, and with it the sheepish wave and the relieved smile that lets the audience know they can now race out of their seats and make their way to the next show across town.

Since I had missed the show, I chatted with Thomas Tait backstage for a bit, while an assistant showed me pieces from the collection. The young designer seemed happy with the reaction — and it had sounded genuinely appreciative — but expressed frustration that he was still finding it hard to crack the United States market, and, in fact, had yet to find a single New York store to carry his line.

“It’s very difficult,” he said, explaining that, as a small designer, he was producing clothes that many of the American buyers found too expensive for their customer. But, he added, he was beginning to see glimmers of interest from a few more stores, and from a few of the key editors, and hoped that more of them would eventually find their way to his showroom, suggesting that not many had made the trek this time.

And, in fact, though I spotted my colleague from T, Sally Singer, coming out of the show, I saw none of the other major editors or retail executives I had become accustomed to seeing over the course of the fashion weeks in New York and Paris.

Joel Ryan/Associated PressAnna Wintour before the Jonathan Saunders show during London Fashion Week.

A few hours later, however, the front row at Jonathan Saunders was filled with the usual heavy hitters: Anna Wintour and the Vogue contingent, Glenda Bailey from Harper’s Bazaar, Lynn Yeager from New York Magazine, plus some key retailers.

Panicked over having missed the Tait show, I had made it to Saunders right on time. Of course that meant I had about 30 minutes to cool my heels until the first model came out.

I spent most of that time chatting with Suzy Menkes of the IHT, who was telling me about the Stella McCartney dinner the night before. It sounded like fun, with a star-studded crowd and a magician doing party tricks.

But while that gathering of the fashion elite was taking place, I was stuck in a late-night queue at Heathrow, behind about 300 people waiting to go through customs. There were only three officials there to handle the crowd — government cutbacks as part of the David Cameron austerity budget I assume — and it took me nearly two hours to get my passport stamped, and I didn’t exit the airport until nearly 11 p.m. There would be no Stella McCartney dinner, nor even time to make last orders at a pub. (“Why me?” I felt like shouting. “Why me?”)

At one point Suzy and I looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows, with their sweeping view of the East End, and with the setting sun glancing off the shimmering surface of the building known as the Gherkin.

“It’s very beautiful, isn’t it,” she said. It was indeed. We sat there in silence, just looking at the view.

And then the show started. Finally.

Some of the most shocking revelations included offers of “free facelifts” and $5,000 “tokens of appreciation.”

Though this might seem completely ludicrous, the publicity a designer can get from an Oscars appearance is unparalleled. And Boch would now. He chose Halle Berry's iconic 2002 Oscars dress – an Elie Saab gown with sheer, embroidered top and burgundy skirt.

“That dress put my career into the stratosphere,” said Bloch. “It launched the designer's career, and it changed Halle's life forever. In that dress, she looked beautiful but vulnerable … it caused people to see her in a whole new light.”

That one single dress has made the rankings of “Best Oscars Gowns of All Time” since Berry wore it in 2002. Elie Saab is now not only a household name, but also a red carpet-favorite.

But, Boch confessed, “The industry has become polluted.”

Money Talks

Merle Ginsberg, senior writer at The Hollywood Reporter, revealed another tactic in the battle for red carpet reign – cold, hard cash.

“Actresses are very often paid to wear a certain gown,” Ginsberg told The Post. “Having Anne Hathaway, Nicole Kidman or Gwyneth Paltrow walking in your dress is worth an enormous amount of money in terms of advertising and brand, and the designers figured that out some time ago.”

“If a designer approaches a celebrity asking to dress them, this agent might say, 'We're looking for a deal that's worth $200,000' – and that figure is on the lower end. You can only imagine the sums that change hands to ensure an actress wears a dress for just one night.”

Historic, renowned fashion houses like Chanel “don't pay anyone, because they don't have to,” according to Ginsberg, but smaller, newer ones might have to go to extremes.

“Some designers do it the subtle way – the actress gets to keep the dress, she may be flown to fashion shows in Europe and sent free clothes all year round,” said Ginsberg.

Actress Charlize Theron is the face of Dior and a paid “spokesperson.” The stunner wore a pink Dior frock to the 2012 Golden Globes and will likely choose the designer for the 2012 Oscars as well. Endorsement companies have become an integral part of the overall red carpet process.

This year, labels will be watching top actresses like Michelle Williams, Rooney Mara and Jessica Chastain for potential endorsement deals, Ginsberg told The Post.

Oscars Gown-Picking Process

Stylists will typically choose between 40 and 80 gowns for his or her celebrity client to choose from for Oscars night. Many of these choices come from the latest fashion shows, i.e. Paris Haute Couture or New York Fashion Week.

However, designers can and will turn down even the most popular Oscar-nominated actresses.

“Designers do turn celebrities down, absolutely,” admitted Ginsberg. “There are two 'not skinny' actresses who are nominated for Academy Awards: Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer – check out the labels they've been wearing to awards shows: Badgley Mischka and Tadashi Shoji. They might look good, but they're not getting Chanel … and women over 40 probably aren't getting Chanel.”

“It's not just the stylist's relationship with the fashion house that dictates what labels someone is offered, it's much more than that,” said Ginsberg. “Even if you look at the difference between Cameron Diaz and Anne Hathaway in terms of what they wear … you're more likely to see Anne in couture. She's more likely to be in a serious, Oscar-style movie … Cameron might be in a hit movie, but she has a different image to designers.”

If an actress wants a custom-made gown, she must contact a particular designer months in advance of the Oscars.

“If you want a custom gown sketched by a designer with beading and embroidery, that can take many weeks to prepare,” Marilyn Heston, head of MHA, an Los Angeles-based international company that pairs celebrities with designers and luxury brands, told The Hollywood Reporter.

However, custom-made gowns are not given out like candy. In fact, they are reserved for the most special leading ladies.

“It's not an overnight deal to get a spectacular Oscar dress. Generally, these tailor-made dresses are only offered to nominees and presenters for the Globes and the Oscars. If a designer spends all that time and money on a gown, they want to make sure that it will end up in Vogue or Women's Wear Daily. This is not an artistic endeavor. The only reason a global designer is dressing an actress is to gain exposure that will raise awareness and increase sales.”

“A Dress Can Make the Celebrity”

According to an L.A.-based fashion insider that spoke to The Post, “being pretty and famous isn't enough for some labels.” Some actresses make it to the “hit lists” whereas others do not, regardless of how much her movie might have grossed at the box office.

Ultimately, the fruitfulness is a-plenty if an actress picks the perfect Oscars dress for the red carpet. “A dress can make the celebrity, but the celebrity cannot make the dress,” said fashion designer Allen B. Schwartz told Reuters.

“An ugly dress will be ugly on anyone. A gorgeous dress will make that actress look that much more exciting.” Just like with Halle Berry in 2002, an actress will be transformed into a princess this year.

We cannot wait to see what Cinderlla story awaits.
